VERGENNES — Vergennes police handled a variety of requests, duties and incidents between Aug. 26 and Sept. 1, including background investigations, vehicle-related incidents and two dog cases.
Police also during that week ticketed five drivers during four directed patrols around the city intended to enforce traffic laws, and:
On Aug. 26:
• Conducted two background investigations, one for the FBI related to firearms ownership and one for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department related to an employment application.
• Referred a report of a young girl vaping in Ferrisburgh to Vermont State Police.
• Helped recover a phone recently stolen from Vergennes City Hall. Police said after the cellphone company pinged the phone with an alert that it was stolen it was returned anonymously to a phone company store, and a store employee contacted police, who picked up the phone to return it to its owner.
• Calmed a resident who was emotionally distraught.
• Helped Addison County Superior Court expunge cases.
On Aug. 27:
• Tried to find a missing person in Vergennes on behalf of state police, but were unsuccessful.
• Spoke to the owner of an aggressive dog at a Hillside Drive apartment and told him to control its behavior near people.
• Calmed an arguing couple at the Aubuchon Plaza in Ferrisburgh on behalf of state police.
• Cited James M. Benway, 36, of Addison for excessive speed after stopping his vehicle on Panton Road for allegedly traveling 85 mph in a 50 mph zone.
On Aug. 28:
• Responding to a complaint at Kinney Drug Store, asked a customer with an out-of-control service dog to leave.
• Asked an individual camping at Settlers Park to leave.
• Removed a shelter from Macdonough Park.
On Aug. 29 ran a traffic checkpoint on Panton Road and stopped 63 vehicles, finding no violations.
On Aug. 30:
• Sent a department Drug Recognition Expert to help Middlebury police.
• Helped the Department for Children and Families by attending a meeting at a School Street home.
• Twice checked reports of suspicious vehicles on Second Street; there was no issue with the first vehicle, and the second left before police arrived.
• Went to a Monkton Road parking lot to check a report of a dog left in a hot vehicle, but found nothing.
On Aug. 31:
• Dealt with two minor two-car accidents on Main Street.
• Investigated the theft of about $20 in cash from an unlocked vehicle on Green Street.
• Accepted a license plate found on Route 66 in Waltham and took steps to return it to its owner.
On Sept. 1 conducted a background check for ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement).
