Middlebury River threatening to flood, Route 125 closed

EAST MIDDLEBURY — Torrential downpours throughout the day on Thursday have washed out portions of Route 125 between East Middlebury and Ripton, forcing closure of the road and detours on the Dugway.
Meanwhile, local fire officials have called for a water rescue team to remain on standby and at 3:30 p.m. were contemplating an emergency evacuation of parts of East Middlebury in response to a swollen Middlebury River.
Middlebury Fire Chief Dave Shaw said current weather forecasts call for another rain event on Thursday at around 4:30 p.m., raising concerns the Middlebury River might jump its banks.
