Girls’ hockey ties Burr & Burton, earns No. 7 seed

MANCHESTER — After completing the regular season with a 3-3 tie at Burr & Burton on Wednesday, the Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team received the No. 7 seed for the Division I playoffs on Thursday.
The 12-6-1 Tigers will open the playoffs at No. 2 Essex (17-2-1) on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. The Tigers had earned the top slot in the second of three six-team girls’ hockey tiers this winter, but per Vermont Principals’ Association rules eight teams are required for postseason tournaments, and the Tigers moved into the D-I postseason. The Tigers lost at home to Essex on Jan. 2, 8-1.
Wednesday’s tie came against Burr & Burton (10-8-2), the top team in the third tier, which ended up earning the No. 1 seed in D-II in the experimental alignment used this year in girls’ hockey.
Scoring for the Tigers were Avery Gale, Carlisle Brush assisting; Merry Kimble unassisted; and Audrey Tembreull, Aleta Mathers assisting. Goalie Lydia Deppman made 18 saves for the Tigers.
