By the way for Dec. 13
The town of New Haven will host its annual Winterfest Celebration this Saturday, Dec. 15, beginning at 5 p.m. with refreshments at the Congregational Church on Town Hill Road across from the town green. Bundle up, get a cup of hot cocoa, tea, coffee, eggnog or cider, and come across the street to the town green, where the fire department will host a memorial tree lighting by the town green at 5:30 p.m. You can then help decorate the memorial tree and enjoy other festive activities until 6:30 p.m. Activities will include a horse-drawn wagon ride, s’mores, hot cocoa, singing of carols, and roasting marshmallows and chestnuts over the fire on the green. Santa is expected to arrive at the bandstand around 5:30 p.m. Then return to the church at 6:30 p.m. for the magical sounds of hand bell ringing, caroling by the choir, and sing-a-long. Free hot refreshments and more yummy desserts will follow downstairs in the church. For more info, please contact Suzy at 453-5978 or email [email protected].
Parishioners at the Bristol Federated Church at 37 North St. continue to plan fun ways to raise money to repair the roof of their beloved place of worship. To that end, the congregation has organized a “Raise the Roof Christmas Supper & Variety Show,” slated for Sunday, Dec. 16, from 6-8 p.m. It’ll include a buffet-style supper with meat and vegetable casseroles, salads, desserts and beverages. The entertainment will feature a mix of the familiar and the new. Robin Hewitt will do a comedy skit, this time with a Christmas theme. Tim and Vernita Weller return with a medley of holiday songs, both sacred and secular. Diana Bigelow and Jim Stapleton will be back with a classic Christmas story. A recently formed group of bagpipers will play holiday melodies accompanied by an Irish drum, the bohdran. Donations of $10 for the supper and $10 for the show will be used to finish paying for the church’s damaged roof. Cash, check, and major credit cards accepted.
The holidays are about spending time with friends and loved ones, while showing gratitude for life’s blessings. Mary’s Restaurant in the Inn at Baldwin Creek will do that on a grand scale this Sunday, Dec. 16, with its 36th Annual Holiday Dinner & Festival. The event, free to Addison County residents, will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include turkey and ham dinner, a special visit from Santa, along with music and other entertainment. Transportation is available, as Addison County Transit Resources runs a bus service along Route 116. For more info or to donate, call 453-2432.
