Area nonprofits win state grants for various capital projects
MONTPELIER — Late in October, Gov. Phil Scott and Chris Cole, Vermont commissioner of Buildings and General Services (BGS), awarded a total of almost $50,000 to Addison County organizations through the “Building Community” grants program administered by BGS. Depending on appropriations by the Vermont General Assembly, the program annually awards around $600,000 in matching grants statewide to municipalities and nonprofit organizations for capital costs associated with the major maintenance, renovation and development of facilities in the following categories: human services, health care and education; recreation; and economic development.
For the 2018 round, $47,783 was awarded to Addison County organizations for the following projects:
• $7,200 to the Bristol Recreation Club Inc. for the completion of the technical components of steep terrain on the trail along the New Haven River;
• $20,000 to the Addison County Economic Development Corporation for Vermont Tree Goods to purchase equipment, make renovations and fit-up costs at a new Bristol location;
• $5,750 to the United Way of Addison County for replacement of the roof on their building; and
• $14,833 to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Vergennes to build a kitchen in their new facility.
