Letter to the editor: Newton has shown caring for children, community

I first met Peter Newton as a parent when I had his daughter in 4th grade. I learned that year how important his children were to him and how much he cared about the community he worked for.
Years later, I found myself retired as an elementary teacher and wondering what to do next. I got a call from Peter. He was explaining to me a program the sheriff’s department was trying to get off the ground — helping the children of Addison County learn about and deal with bullying.
He convinced me I was the right person for the job. He was right. This fall is my fourth year going to Addison County schools talking to children about respectful friendships and strategies to deal with bullying behavior.
When I saw his campaign as telling of his care for his community I thought “For sure!” This man and his concern for our county’s children is amazing. His care is real.
His passion for helping our kids is why I am able to talk to over 1,000 children each year. Peter is a man with integrity. He has worked hard for our children and I know he will continue to do so in the future, hopefully as Sheriff.
