ADDISON COUNTY — In first-round high school girls’ soccer playoff action on Wednesday the Mount Abraham and Vergennes girls each won at home, while the Middlebury and Otter Valley girls were eliminated in road contests.
The Eagles, seeded No. 6 in Division II, piled up a 22-0 edge in shots on goal in ousting No. 11 Mill River, 4-0. Jessica Colbeth scored twice, including once in the second minute, to lead the Mount Abe attack. Chloe Johnston scored once and set up Colbeth’s first goal, Grace Harvey’s first-half goal made it 2-0, and Lucy Guy chipped in with two assists. Eagle goalie Justice Green did not have to stop a shot, while Malori Carson made 18 saves for 4-10-1 MRU.
The Eagles improved to 8-5-2 with their fifth straight win, but will face a tougher challenge from another streaking team in a Saturday quarterfinal at 1 p.m. — Harwood (12-2-1) winners of nine straight and a traditional Eagle playoff nemesis.
VUHS, the No. 6 seed in D-III, tripped up No. 11 Windsor, 3-1. Commodores Sydney Weber, from Maria Malaney, and Emily Rooney, from Ciara McClay, scored in the first half, and Malaney finished off a Leah Croke assist in the second half. Windsor benefited from an own goal in the late going. VUHS goalie Kate Gosliga stopped the only other ball that threatened her net, while goalie Adi Prior made nine saves for 7-8 Windsor.
 On Friday at 3 p.m. the 7-5-2 Commodores will visit No. 3 Green Mountain Union, which on Wednesday improved to  14-1 with a one-goal win over No. 14 Enosburg. VUHS faced a tougher schedule than the Chieftains. That game was moved from Saturday due to a threatening forecast.
The D-II and D-III semifinals are both set for this coming Wednesday at 3 p.m., and finals for the following Saturday.
In D-I this past Saturday host No. 4 Burr & Burton blanked No. 13 MUHS, 4-0. Grace Pinkus scored twice to lead the 10-4-1 Bulldogs. The Tigers wrapped up at 3-12.
In D-III host No. 4 Peoples (11-3-1) ousted No. 13 OV, 3-0, as Lily Metzler scored twice, once on a penalty kick. Peoples goalie Paige Pierce made six saves, while Sophia Walker stopped 10 shots as OV finished 7-8.

In other action coming this weekend, the MUHS football team earned the No. 5 seed in D-1 with a 5-3 mark and will play at No. 4 Rice, also 5-3, on Saturday at 1 p.m. A victory in that game would probably mean a date with No. 1 Mount Mansfield next weekend.
Neither the Otter Valley nor the Mount Abe-VUHS football teams qualified for the D-II playoffs, but OV (1-7) will play a 7 p.m. Friday wild card contest at Mount Anthony (2-6).
In boys’ soccer both MUHS and VUHS advanced and will play in quarterfinals at 3 p.m. on Friday.
The Tigers, at 11-3-1 the No. 5 seed in D-I and winners of eight straight, will host No. 13 Burlington. The 6-6-2 Seahorses upset No. 4 South Burlington on Tuesday.
The Commodores, at 9-6 the No. 6 seed in D-III, will visit No. 3 Winooski at the same time. The Spartans are 14-1, but played a less challenging schedule than VUHS.
The D-I and D-III boys’ semifinals are set for Tuesday at 3 p.m., with finals to follow on Saturday.
MUHS, VUHS, Mount Abe and OV cross-country runners will all head to Thetford on Saturday to compete in the D-II girls and boys’ championship races.
