Boys’ soccer: VUHS & Mt. Abe win

ADDISON COUNTY — Late last week in final regular season high school boys’ soccer action Vergennes and Mount Abraham each won twice to nail down first-round home playoff games, while Otter Valley lost twice. 
The Vermont Principals’ Association was set to announce playoff pairings on Monday morning, and teams will play first-round games on Tuesday or Wednesday.
On Wednesday the Commodores blanked host Spaulding, 1-0. Ezekiel Palmer netted the game-winner, a high shot from the top of the box, midway through the second half, and goalie Gabriel Kadric stopped six shots. Tide goalie Parker Spaulding made seven saves. 
On Saturday the Commodores rallied to knock off visiting Milton, 2-1. The Yellowjackets took the lead in the first half, but Jonathan Willis equalized with 13 minutes left in regulation, and Palmer supplied the game-winner five minutes later. Kadric stopped eight shots, and two Milton goalies combined for six saves.
The Commodores finished 8-6 after a 1-4 start and apparently earned the No. 6 seed in Division III. Randolph (3-10-1) could visit in the first round, and Winooski (13-1) is a potential quarterfinal foe.
On Wednesday the Eagles got an overtime headball goal from Weston Allred to defeat host Green Mountain Valley, 3-2. Sam Schoenhuber set up the tying goal and assisted Neo Weaver’s first-half goal. William Wright, fromEric McKean, also scored, and Eagle goalie Ethan DeWitt stopped six shots. Gumby goalie Markus Basciano made 10 saves.
On Saturday the Eagles got two goals and an assist from Angus Schwaneflugel in a 4-1 victory over visiting Spaulding. Silas Burgess and Allred also scored, and Owen Maille chipped in two assists. DeWitt stopped five shots.
The Eagles finished at 5-7-2 and apparently earned the No. 7 seed in D-II. Stratton (6-4-1) could visit in the first round, and Woodstock or OV might be next.
On Thursday Leland & Gray (10-3) knocked off the visiting Otters, 4-2. Kieran Williams and Patrick McKeighan scored for OV.
On Saturday host West Rutland blanked the Otters, 3-0, leaving them with a 3-10-1 record
The Otters will apparently visit No. 2 Woodstock (9-3-1) in the first round. OV played competitively in two losses to the Wasps this fall.
