MONKTON — Vermont Reads is a statewide community reading program, in which the Vermont Humanities Council invites citizens across the state to read the same book and participate in community activities related to the book’s themes.
The 2018 selection is “Bread and Roses, Too” by Katherine Paterson. The novel of historical fiction tells the story of the 1912 “Bread and Roses” strike in the Lawrence, Mass., textile mills through the eyes of an Italian-America girl and a runaway boy. The novel relates their journey as they are sent temporarily out of harm’s way to foster families in Barre, Vt., as children actually were during the strike.
The East Monkton Church Association, in collaboration with the Monkton Museum and Historical Society, and with the support of the Russell Memorial Library, is hosting this year’s program. Books, provided by the Vermont Humanities Council, are available at the Russell Memorial Library during the regular patron hours or from Candace Polzella at the contact info below.
The following events related to the book are offered:
•  Sept. 3 at 1 p.m.: Tour of the Old Labor Hall where the children were first welcomed to Barre. Carpool from the East Monkton Church.
•  Sept. 9 at 2 p.m.: Book discussion to explore some of the themes of the book held at the East Monkton Church
