Shepard nips Preston at Devil’s Bowl
WEST HAVEN — Vergennes driver Kaleb Shepard edged Panton’s Mike Preston for his third consecutive win in the Portland Glass Mini Stock series to provide the local highlight in dirt-track action at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
In a race shortened from 15 to 11 laps due to time constraints after three wrecks, one involving Middlebury’s Joe Malzac, Shepard moved up from a 16th-place starting position to claim the victory.
In the 67-lap main event, Queensbury, N.Y., driver Demetrios Drellos earned $3,000 by winning the King of Dirt Racing (KOD) Small Block 358 Modified Series race, which was run in the memory of C.J. Richards. Orwell’s Tim LaDuc finished 10th in that race.
Sixteen year-old Travis Billington of South Glens Falls, N.Y., topped the 20-lap feature race for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman division. The win was the fourth of the season for the championship point leader. Salisbury’s Brent Warren was third, Leicester’s Adam Piper took fifth, and Bristol’s R.J. Germain finished 10th.
Scott FitzGerald of West Rutland prevailed in the 15-lap Super Stock feature. After a tough few weeks, the veteran put his car out front to lead every lap and take his second win of the season. Cornwall’s Garrett Given earned a third-place finish in that event.
Devil’s Bowl Speedway returns to action on Sunday at 7 p.m.
