Man jailed after kidnapping, lewdness arrest

MIDDLEBURY —  Middlebury police on Wednesday, Aug. 1, cited 51-year-old Lyle N. Birchard of Salisbury on counts of kidnapping and lewd and lascivious conduct, stemming from a recent investigation into alleged incidents at two residences on South Pleasant Street in Middlebury.
In a brief press release issued late Wednesday afternoon, Middlebury Police Det. Kris Bowdish said the alleged kidnap victim was an “elderly, vulnerable” woman, and she identified the second victim is “an elderly woman.”
Bowdish said Birchard is not related to either of the two victims.
Police said Birchard pleaded innocent to the kidnapping and L&L charges on Wednesday in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, and he is currently being held without bail. The next hearing in this case is slated for Aug. 8 at the county courthouse, according to Bowdish.
