Letter to the editor: Sheriff candidate has experience

I strongly endorse Peter Newton as the next sheriff of Addison County. Peter currently serves as a lieutenant in the sheriff’s department under the mentorship of Sheriff Keeler. Peter has spent 28 years in public safety, 13 of which were in the emergency medical field, and the last 15 dedicated to law enforcement.
Peter has risen to the rank of lieutenant under the leadership of Sheriff Keeler. He is a Patrol Procedures Instructor and a training assistant at the Vermont Police Academy. Peter is truly an experienced and dedicated law enforcement professional.
I have known Peter for many years and worked closely with him as a board member of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. Peter’s dedication to the athletes was evidenced by his support of Torch Runs in Middlebury, Bristol and Vergennes for many years. Peter, along with many other law enforcement professionals in the county, ensured that Addison Special Olympians were well represented.
Peter’s goals are to ensure that all of the citizens of Addison County enjoy safe roads and safe communities. He has the experience and dedication to meet these goals, and the leadership ability to ensure that the members of the sheriff’s department continue the professionalism established under Sheriff Keeler.
