Letter to the editor: Middlebury parallel parking backed
I agree with Spence Putnam’s suggested parking on the Battell Bridge in downtown Middlebury. I will go one step further — when I was a kid in the ‘50s there was parallel parking all the way from the Library to the next corner which was, at the time, the First National grocery store and is now the art gallery. Believe me, the cars in the 50s were NOT smaller than now!
It would be a simple matter to create spaces that are perhaps another quarter longer so people are not bucking in and out and holding up traffic.
Post a sign at the rotary that says something like “Temporary narrowed lanes ahead; trucks use detour to U.S. 7” with a nice arrow pointing at the new bridge. Put the same sign on Route 7 near the Congregational Church and by the Community House for trucks coming up Seymour street.
