Wind down on Fridays with summer concerts
For the past seven years Lincoln Peak Vineyards has offered a great way to begin the weekend: a relatively informal Friday evening concert that is played outside close to the vines that grow the grapes that make the winery’s excellent beverage. The vineyard will kick off its 8th season of community concerts this Friday with a performance by a local group of musicians known as Gumbo Ya Ya.
Come between 5:30 and 6 p.m. to the venue on River Road in New Haven, just a few hundred yards east of Route 7, and bring a picnic basket and some lawn chairs or a blanket. And get comfortable.
Gumbo Ya Ya, which will perform from 6 to 8 p.m., is a rock ‘n’ roll stew, cooking up soul calypso, ska, reggae, worldgroove, and something they call “n’awlins” funk (that’s the New Orleans — The Big Easy). They top it off with delicious spicy solos and improvisations, served with an uplifting message and fine vocals. You may recognize the flavors of the Allman Brothers Band, Little Feat, Traffic and The Band. Tunes will be dished up by the superbly funky Felix Anderson and Glenn Goodwin on drums and bass, Jim Carroll and John Dickason on guitars, and taken into the interstellar reaches by Ron Rost on keys and Poppy Rees on vocals.
Admission is free. Delicious hot food will be available from The Antidote, and wine by the glass. Please don’t bring your own alcohol onto the grounds, and leave your pets at home. The concert series happens rain or shine — there’s room on the winery porch in case of rain.
These picnic concerts on the lawn are slated to happen every other Friday night through the summer. After this week, the schedule includes: June 8 – Jeff Salisbury Band, June 22 – Sabouyouma, July 6 – Mellow Yellow, July 20 – Snake Mountain Bluegrass, Aug 3 – Sidewinders, Aug 17 – LC Jazz Band, and Aug 31 – Starline Rhythm Boys.
