Letter to the editor: Matt Birong announces run for Addison-3 seat

I am excited and honored to announce my candidacy for State Representative Addison-3, serving Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Vergennes and Waltham. I moved to this community 11 years ago to open 3 Squares Café in Vergennes. I am extremely proud to call Addison County home. My wife Danelle and I received a warm embrace upon our arrival, and you continued to support us as we’ve grown our small business.
With this support, we’ve grown a business that is as much a part of the community as we are, possibly even more. As a small business owner, I strive to provide members of the community with skills that they can carry on — regardless of where life takes them. I’ve found my investment in employment practices that lift my employees up to be incredibly valuable to my business. Through my work on the board of Main Street Alliance of Vermont, I’ve been able to give a voice to small business owners across the state who share these values.
Over the last several years, I have become more engaged in policy development in Montpelier as a business owner and advocate. In addition, I had the incredible honor of serving as Democratic Party Delegate in Philadelphia in 2016. I have learned so much through these experiences, and I am inspired to keep working to move our community and state forward.
As a life-long Vermonter, I understand what makes this such a unique and wonderful place to call home but realize there is a great deal to be improved. I am running to be your Representative because I believe the families and individuals in Addison County deserve better. As your Representative, the challenges and needs of our community will always be my first priority. I will use my experience as a foundation to give a voice to all of us.
Vermonters deserve solutions, and I am ready to get to work. I’m stepping into this race to make change that supports a healthy economy and thriving local communities. I believe that by investing in infrastructure, addressing local environmental challenges, and improving our tax structure, we will begin to move in the right direction.
I can’t do this without your support and feedback. As your Representative, I will be attentive and available to you. I am interested in solving problems and building consensus to get us on the right track, and I believe my 20 years of business ownership and management have prepared me well for this task. I will bring strong yet compassionate representation to Montpelier on behalf of this amazing community.
