Panther softball falls in tourney
AMHERST, Mass. — Bowdoin rallied to defeat the Middlebury College softball team, 3-2, and end the Panthers’ season in a NESCAC quarterfinal playoff game played at top-seeded Amherst on Saturday morning.
The Panthers ended their season at 20-11 and reached the 20-win plateau for the sixth time in the past eight seasons.
Middlebury scored both of its runs in the third inning. Ali Della Volpe singled to start the rally and scored on Olivia Bravo’s double. Bravo eventually scored on an Emily Moore sacrifice fly.
The Polar Bears (30-11) knotted the game at 2-2 off losing pitcher Emily Morris in the sixth. Lauren O’Shea doubled and Caroline Rice walked. Claire McCarthy singled in O’Shea, and Rice scored on an Allison Ruts sacrifice fly.
Bowdoin scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Maddie Rouhana led off with a single. A pinchrunner moved to second on a ground out and scored on an O’Shea single for the walk-off win.
Morris (10-8) went the distance for the Panthers, allowing three runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts. Della Volpe poked two hits, while Bravo walked twice as well as doubled.
Ruby Siltanen (9-1) picked up the win in relief, allowing one hit and striking out three in two innings.
