Vergennes food shelf asking for help to feed those in need

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Food Shelf is in need of supplies to fill its pantry so it can provide struggling families with much-needed meals. In an effort to help, the Vergennes Council of the Knights of Columbus is spearheading a “Food for Families” campaign in cooperation with the Vergennes Rotary Club, and local Boy Scouts.
Members of each of the three organizations will be at Shaw’s Supermarket and Kinney Drugs in Vergennes on Friday, April 13, from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday April 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to collect donations.
This cooperative effort will round out the Knights’ yearly project that will earn $500 from the Supreme Council of Knights of Columbus, which will be donated to the Vergennes Area Food Shelf as well. Last December the Knights’ and St. Peter’s “Christmas Food Boxes” project weighed in at over 2,400 pounds of turkey with all the fixings as the first part of the “Food for Families” yearly program.
Non-perishable items such as canned meals, baked beans, spaghettios, ravioli, and similar items, any canned fruit and vegetables, soups (no tomato or chicken noodle please), evaporated milk, powdered milk, potatoes, carrots, squash, tooth brushes, toiletry items and cash donations will be accepted.
