Middlebury College baseball opens season with two losses and a win
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. — The Middlebury College baseball team won once in three road games this past weekend to open its season.
On Saturday, the Panthers lost, 8-4, at Stevens Institute of Technology. Stevens struck for four runs on five hits in the bottom of the third off losing pitcher Spencer Shores.
Stevens added four more in the fourth off Shores and reliever John Tipps before Robert Erickson came on to shut the door with 4.2 innings of one-hit relief.
The Panthers scored once in the sixth on a Justin Han single, a hit batter, a wild pitch and an error. Middlebury scored three in the seventh on a walk to Brooks Carroll, a Han RBI infield hit, a wild pitch, and an Andrew Hennings RBI grounder.
On Sunday the Panthers split a doubleheader at Bard College in New York, winning the opener, 7-0, and dropping the nightcap, 9-3.
In the opener Colby Morris earned the win on the mound. He allowed two hits and two walks in six innings while striking out nine. George Goldstein recorded the final three outs.
The Panthers scored twice on the first. Henry Strmecki doubled, stole third and scored on a throwing error, and Han scored on a Hennings sacrifice fly.
Middlebury tacked on four more runs the second. Hamilton Evans stole home. Gray Goolsby, Hayden Smith (three hits) and Han scored three more runs on Strmecki and Hennings sacrifice flies and a Sam Graf single. Goolsby scored in the sixth on a Han RBI grounder.
Colin Waters took the loss in the nightcap, allowing six runs, four earned, in 3.1 innings. Andrew Martinson also got roughed up in 1.2 innings before Justin Legowski tossed a scoreless frame.
Middlebury got its three runs in the top of the fifth. Smith doubled and scoring on a Strmecki double. Strmecki later scored on a Hennings sacrifice fly and Han scored the third run on an RBI groundout from Grant Elgarten.
