Letter to the editor: New candidate for Middlebury selectboard
My name is Lindsey Fuentes-George, and I am running for Middlebury selectboard. My family has lived in Middlebury for seven years, and three years ago, chose East Middlebury to buy our home. I work full time providing client support with the Counseling Service of Addison County. My husband, Kemi, teaches at Middlebury College. We have three children, Xavier, Aldan, and Bennet. Xavier and Aldan attend Mary Hogan School, and Bennet will begin attending Sunshine Preschool this fall.
I am running for selectboard to be sure everyone in Middlebury has a voice in our government. Many working families struggle to make a home here due to high costs of living. New families, who may reflect the increasing diversity in our town, often struggle just to feel at home. With the current national political situation, we need to ensure that our local government is responsive to, and representative of, everyone in our community. I would bring this resolve to my work on the selectboard.
Our town has many strengths and much to be proud of. Middlebury is a safe and welcoming place to raise a family. Our schools, library, college, recreation department, and community organizations provide a range of opportunities for learning, enrichment, and cultural connections. We benefit from a small, close-knit community.
At the same time, we face many challenges. We need to find ways to make housing and transportation affordable for working families. We need to sustain a local economy that grows and attracts varied, long-term job opportunities, while also preserving a healthy environment. We need to ensure that our children will be able to choose Middlebury when it is their turn to find work, invest in a home, and start a family.
I hope to bring a fresh, progressive perspective to the Board; to be not only a new voice, but a new set of ears, as well. I’d like to maintain a selectboard that is as diverse as our community, and responsive to the needs of all its members. I look forward to getting to work building a stronger, more vibrant Middlebury. I ask for your vote on March 6th.
