Mt. Abe wrestlers are 2nd at MMU tourney; Tigers’ Davio wins No. 100

JERICHO — Local wrestlers made an impact at Mount Mansfield Union High School’s annual Jason Lowell Memorial Tournament on Saturday, when Middlebury wrestler Dustin Davio earned his 100th career win and two Mount Abraham wrestlers, senior Ben Murray and junior Roman Mayer, won their weight classes to help the Eagles finish second as a team.
Two more wrestlers, Otter Valley’s Josh Beayon and Mount Abe’s Kevin Pearsall, joined Davio in finishing second in their weight classes.
Eagle wrestlers Gary Conant and Matt Cota put in third-place efforts as Mount Abe trailed only Peru, N.Y., in the standings, with Beekmantown, N.Y., taking third among 16 schools competing.
Mount Abe Coach Nick Mayer said the Eagles have been competitive all season, with only one dual-meet loss, that to Essex. Mount Abe, MUHS and Vergennes will all compete this Saturday at the NVAC meet in Essex, while OV will head to Fair Haven for the Marble Valley League title meet. The Otters will host the state championship meet on Feb. 23 and 24.
Davio, wrestling at 132 pounds, earned his 100th win in the semifinal round on Saturday by defeating a Peru wrestler.
He then met Roman Mayer, the top-ranked Vermont wrestler at 132, in the final. Mayer prevailed in what Coach Mayer described as another in a series of four tough, grueling matches this winter between the two — all won by the Eagle, but not easily.
“Every match has been edge-of-your seat,” Coach Mayer said.
Roman Mayer moved his record this season to 34-3 and in his career to 128-23.     EAGLE JUNIOR ROMAN Mayer throws Sean Martin of Williamstown before eventually pinning him in a 132-pound match at Mount Mansfield this past weekend. Mayer won his weight class.

Murray won the 126-pound title over Jack Hayea of Peru in the final, 7-0. He improved to 36-2, and according to Coach Mayer recently broke the Mount Abe school record by improving his career record to 143-57. The previous record holder was Shawn Kimball, who finished with 132 wins in 2007, Mayer said. Murray’s tournament title was his fifth of the winter.
Beayon finished second at 170 pounds to MMU’s Colby Giroux, who the coaches named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler.
Pearsall took second place at 195, losing by 11-10 to Beekmantown’s Jaden Maldonado. Coach Mayer said Pearsall has placed either first or second in six tournaments this winter, with a 33-7 record. Like Mayer, Pearsall also earned his 100th win earlier this season.
Also for Mount Abe, Conant earned third at 138 pounds, defeating Justin Jackson of MUHS and OV’s Daniel Whitney along the way. Whitney took fourth in the weight class for OV.
Eagle junior Matt Cota took third at 160, pinning Gage Coe of Lake Region 57 seconds into the consolation final.
At 152, Eagle freshman Nate Lavoie took fourth, improving to 20-8.    160-POUND EAGLE Matt Cota pins Gage Coe of Lake Region in 57 seconds to secure a third-place finish in Mount Mansfield’s Jason Lowell tournament Saturday.
