Eagle boys highlight high school hoop action
ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school basketball games earlier this week the Mount Abraham boys picked up arguably their biggest win so far this winter, while Vergennes and Otter Valley girls both lost home contests.
The Middlebury boys hosted the VUHS boys on Tuesday; see story on Page 1B. Other games were played after the deadline for this paper.
EAGLE BOYS
On Tuesday the Eagle boys upset visiting Milton, 64-57, by outscoring the Yellowjackets by 25-14 in the fourth quarter. Milton, which entered the contest at 9-1 and in fourth place in Division II, led the Eagles at halftime, 25-16.
The Eagles closed the gap in the third quarter to 43-39 even though Milton’s Ian Jennings scored 21 of his game-high 27 points in the second half.
Mount Abe’s Liam Kelliher then scored 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter, and Logan Rodriquez (16 points) hit two late three-pointers to seal the victory. Jackson Counter (14 points) also reached double digits for the Eagles, who improved to 5-8 and equaled their win total from the 2016-2017 season.
VUHS GIRLS
On Monday visiting Winooski rolled to a 60-34 win over the Commodores, their second win over the VUHS girls in four days. Lydia Nattress (28 points, eight assists) and Amna Cicak (11 points and 16 rebounds) led the 6-6 Spartans.
Morgan Lynk and Sophie Hatch scored seven points each as the Commodores dropped to 3-9.
OV GIRLS
The OV girls fell to visiting Windsor, 51-46, on Monday in a tight battle decided by the Yellowjackets’ better free-throw shooting down the stretch. Olivia Rockwood and Angelina Bigwood led Windsor (7-5) with 15 points apiece.
Three players hit double figures for the 3-8 Otters: Livia Bernhardt (13), Gabby Poalino (12) and Alia Edmunds (10).
