MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School gymnastics team pulled out a victory over visiting Milton on Wednesday by a slim margin, 115.20-115.05, at Middlebury Union Middle School.
Strong efforts by Tiger gymnasts Lian McGarry, Laura Whitley and Carly Burger helped the Tigers overcome a big night from Milton’s Alexis Drown, who won on the beam, tied Burger for first on the floor and for fourth in the vault, and outpointed the field to win the all-around title.
McGarry won the vault and tied Whitley for first on the bars, while Whitley added seconds on the beam and in the all-around and a sixth on the floor. Burger added a third on the beam to her efforts on the floor and in the vault.
Non-scoring Tiger male gymnast Nick Scott posted results that would have been good enough to win the vault (8.35) and bars (8.4).
In individual events this past Wednesday the top place-winners were:
•  Vault: 1. McGarry (MUHS), 7.95; 2. Makayla Mullins (Milton), 7.9; 3. Davilyn Bourne (Milton), 7.75; 4. Drown (Milton) and Burger (MUHS), 7.65; 6. Kayleigh Bluto (Milton ) and Julianna Williams (Fair Haven independent), 7.6.
•  Bars: 1. McGarry and Whitley (MUHS), 7.0; 2. Alyson Chione (MUHS), 6.6; 3. Bourne and Kylee Shaw (Milton), 6.1; 5. Maeve Hammel (MUHS), 5.9; 6. Hailey Hemingway (Milton), 5.8.
•  Beam: 1. Drown (Milton), 8.1; 2. Whitley (MUHS), 7.75; 3. Burger (MUHS), 7.6; 4. Bluto (Milton), 7.3; 5. Bourne (Milton), 7.15; 6. Lydia Alberts (MUHS), and Jaesa Barnao and Kylee Shaw (Milton), 7.0.
•  Floor: 1. Drown (Milton) and Burger (MUHS), 7.95; 3. Bluto (Milton) and Williams (Fair Haven), 7.8; 5. Meghan Fondakowski (Milton), 7.5; 6. Whitley (MUHS), 7.4.
•  All Around: 1. Drown (Milton), 29.7; 2. Whitley (MUHS), 28.5; 3. Bourne (Milton), 28.35; 4. Hammel (MUHS), 26.3; 5. Louisa Funk (Mount Abraham independent), 25.0.
The Tigers are set to host Champlain Valley this Wednesday at MUMS at 6 p.m.
