MUHS gymnasts defeat Harwood
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School gymnastics team edged visiting Harwood on Tuesday, 107-103.3, overcoming an outstanding effort by Harwood’s Delana Cheney, who won the vault, beam and floor exercises as well as the all-around competition.
Highlighting the event for the Tigers were Lian McGarry, who tied for first on the bars and was second on the vault; Laura Whitley, who was second in the all-around and beam and third on the floor; and Carly Burger, second on the floor, fourth on the vault, and sixth on the beam.
Tiger Nick Scott, whose scores do not count because of his gender, performed well enough to tie Cheney for first in the vault, and his score of 7.6 would have won on the bars.
The top finishers in each discipline were:
Vault: 1. Delana Cheney (HHS), 8.0; 2. McGarry (MUHS), 7.8; 3. Veda Chojinicki (HHS), 7.7; 4. Burger (MUHS), 7.4; 5. Louisa Funk (Mount Abraham independent) 7.3; 6. Maeve Hammel (MUHS), 7.2.
Bars: 1. McGarry (MUHS) and Riley Gallagher (HHS), 6.4; 3. Whitley (MUHS), 6.3; 4. Cheney (HHS), 6.1; 5. Alyson Chione (MUHS), 6.0; 6. Maeve Hammel (MUHS), 5.3.
Beam: 1. Cheney (HHS), 8.0; 2. Whitley (MUHS), 7.6; 3. Lydia Alberts (MUHS), 7.2; 4. Christina Wiles (MUHS) and Laura Cora (HHS), 6.9; 6. Burger (MUHS), 6.8.
Floor: 1. Cheney (HHS), 7.2; 2. Burger (MUHS), 6.8; 3. Whitley (MUHS), 6.6; 4. Chojinicki (HHS), 6.3; 5. Chione (MUHS), 6.2; 6. Christina Wiles (MUHS), 5.6.
All Around: 1. Cheney (HHS), 29.3; 2. Whitley (MUHS), 25.5; 3. Sophia LeGard (HHS), 23.3; 4. Brooke Benjamin (HHS), 23; 5. Lynn Russell (HHS), 21.7; 6. Funk (Mt. Abe) 21.3.
