Letter to the editor: Consider alternative to huge Mount Abe investment
I am heartened to read Mr. Harris’s Community Forum piece and Mr. Lynn’s editorial in the Jan. 4 Addison Independent. Thank you both for bringing home the point that spending $29.5 million on the Mt. Abraham Union High School at this juncture would be catastrophic.
To spend the next 30 years paying that off while the student population (and therefore the state funding) dwindles is beyond daunting. The cost of the yearly school budgets is already crushing. Coupled with the trend that taxpayers will be moving away over the life of the bond leaving those that are left with more of the burden … well you can see where I’m going with this.
It is my feeling that the ideas of Mr. Harris merit a closer look. I’ve known Steve and his wife, Judith, for many years and they are a force that this community would do well to listen to if for nothing more than outside-the-box ideas. I think that is what is required here. Please don’t fall for the $30-million millstone.
