Winter film screening series continues with ‘California Typewriter’

The Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival continues its popular 2017/18 Winter Screening Series at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury with the engaging and thoughtful documentary, “California Typewriter” on Sunday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m.
A documentary portrait of artists, writers and collectors who remain steadfastly loyal to the typewriter as a tool and a muse, this intriguing film, directed by Doug Nichol, features Tom Hanks, John Mayer, David McCullough, Sam Shepard, and others.
It also movingly documents the struggles of California Typewriter, one of the last remaining repair shops in America dedicated to keeping the aging machines clicking. In the process, the film delivers a thought-provoking meditation on the changing dynamic between humans and machines, as the digital age’s emphasis on speed and convenience redefines who is actually serving whom, human or machine?
The “California Typewriter” screening will be introduced by MNFF Artistic Director Jay Craven, who will also moderate a Q&A following the film.
Expanding to six films from five, the MNFF Winter Screening Series offers one distinctive feature every month beginning in December and concluding in May.  The series retains its exclusive focus on prominent work by first and second time filmmakers.
MNFF would like to alert its audiences to a change in the schedule for the February and March films in the Series.  The powerful and timely documentary, “I Am Evidence,” will now screen at Town Hall Theater on Sunday, Feb. 18 instead of Sunday, March 11. The riveting drama “Novitiate” will be shown on Sunday, March 11 instead of Feb. 18.
Trailers and additional information for all films in the Winter Screening Series are available at the MNFF website, middfilmfest.org.
Individual tickets are $12 and are available at the MNFF website, middfilmfest.org, or at the Town Hall Theater Box Office, either in person [Mon.-Sat., 12-5 p.m.], by phone at (802) 382-9222 or online at townhalltheater.org.
MNFF thanks its venue partner, Town Hall Theater in Middlebury, for bringing the Winter Screening Series to life as well as its fine sponsors: The Addison Independent, the official media partner of the Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival, Farm Fresh Radio, its official radio partner, IPJ Real Estate, Brennan, Punderson & Donahue, PLLC, and Marble Trail Financial.
