In girls’ hoop: Eagles, Commodores post victories
ADDISON COUNTY — In recent high school girls’ basketball action, Vergennes moved over .500; Mount Abraham won Fair Haven’s holiday tournament, but then dropped two games vs. top competition; and Middlebury and Otter Valley came up short.
COMMODORES
On Saturday the Commodores held on for a 36-34 victory over visiting Montpelier, thanks to help from the bench: 22 of their 36 points came from substitutes, including nine from Kate Gosliga and eight from Amber Krumrie. Brianna Vanderway anchored the paint for 2-1 VUHS with 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots. Noel Riby-Williams scored 12 for the 3-1 Solons.
EAGLES
On Wednesday the 27th the Eagles pulled away in the second half to defeat Burr & Burton, 48-24, in the opening round of Fair Haven’s annual holiday tournament. Mount Abe led by only 17-15 at the half, but Emma Carter (20 points in all) led a second-half surge. Jalen Cook (10) and Cora Funke (five) were among the eight Eagles in the scoring column.
On Thursday the Eagles outlasted the host Slaters, 33-29, to win the event. Carter led the Eagles with 15 points, and she and Abby Mansfield, who excelled on defense and the boards, made the all-tournament team.
Adriana Dalto lead the 4-2 Slaters with 10 points and Kaylee Brown added eight.
On Saturday host U-32 (3-2) avenged an earlier loss in Bristol by defeating the Eagles, 43-35, behind balanced scoring led by Reilly Flye (nine points). Carter scored 15 for Mount Abe.
On Tuesday visiting South Burlington improved to 5-0 with a 53-31 victory over the Eagles. Mount Abe eked out a 17-16 halftime lead, but the Wolves erupted behind Emma MacDonough in the second half for the win; she finished with 31 points. Cook (12 points) and Carter (nine) led the 4-2 Eagles in scoring.
OTTERS
On Dec. 28 visiting West Rutland defeated OV, 52-44, improving to 4-1 in the process. The Otters dropped to 1-2 despite 14 points from Alia Edmunds and 12 from Gabby Poalino.
TIGERS
On Saturday host Milton denied the Tigers their first win, 52-41, as Cassidy Button poured in 25 points. Keagan Dunbar scored 19 to lead MUHS (0-3), Ashley Sunderland contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Shannon Sunderland added seven points.
