College accepts 326 through early choice
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College has offered 326 students early admission to the Class of 2022. The admitted students were chosen from a pool of 650 applicants and represent about 45 percent of a class that is expected to total about 715.
“Once again, we were inspired by the quality of our early decision applicants,” said Dean of Admissions Greg Buckles. “The Class of 2022 will be a diverse and multi-talented group of academic achievers who bring that and so much more to our community.”
Of the students admitted, 23 percent are students of color. First-generation students, meaning those who are the first in their family to attend college, represent 11 percent of the group.
The college deferred 39 applicants, who will be considered for regular admission in the spring, and denied admission to 285 students.
Middlebury’s early decision program is binding, which means that students who apply have selected Middlebury as their first choice and are committed to attending if accepted.
While 300 of the newly accepted students will enroll in the fall of 2017, 26 will begin their first semester at Middlebury in February 2019 through the college’s February Admissions Program.
Buckles said that the 326 students accepted to the Class of 2022 are from 32 states, Washington, D.C., and 20 countries. The top countries represented outside the United States are China, Canada and the Philippines.
“Students tell us they are drawn to Middlebury’s blend of outstanding academics and rich experiences beyond the classroom,” said Buckles. “These are qualities that continue to attract so many talented students to the college and to Vermont.”
Most of the students learned of their admission by logging onto a secure website beginning at 8 a.m. on Dec. 9. Mailed letters arrived at their homes the following week. Thirty of the students were admitted through the college’s Posse Foundation program. Middlebury College has three 10-student Posse Scholar teams, from New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Those students are chosen following a rigorous selection process in each city.
Middlebury College offers two early-decision programs, including an Early Decision 2 round, which typically draws a smaller number — about 300 student applicants. The deadline for Early Decision 2 and for regular admission applications was Jan. 1. Middlebury notifies Early Decision 2 applicants in mid-February and regular decision applicants in late March or early April.
