College rings in season with Lessons and Carols
Middlebury College will host the annual holiday event “Lessons and Carols for Advent and Christmas” on Sunday, Dec. 10, 4 and 7 p.m., at Mead Chapel in Middlebury. Now in its 46th year in Middlebury, this service has been a special Addison County tradition. A large audience of college and community members and families will fill the chapel to share in a sense of community and hopefulness of the season.
Members of the Middlebury College community will read the “lessons” — readings from scripture that frame the Christmas story. The Middlebury College Choir and Collegium under the direction of Jeffrey Buettner will perform carols and compositions of different times and places, including European, African and African American traditions. The choir will lead the congregation in singing Advent and Christmas music. Organists Jeffrey Buettner and Ronnie Romano ’20 will accompany the choir and congregation, and provide organ music before and after the services. Middlebury College Chaplain Laurie Jordan will lead the service.
The event is free. Instead of admission, each year donations are collected for local community non-profit organizations. Proceeds will be given to HOPE (Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects), Elderly Services and Addison County Home Health and Hospice.
