Vermont fire safety calendar to feature Bristol kids’ art

MONTPELIER — Eight Bristol Elementary School third graders attended a ceremony at the Statehouse in Montpelier on Friday, Nov. 3, to celebrate the selection of their Fire Safety posters to be included in the Robert Howe Fire Safety Calendar.
This contest, held annually by the State of Vermont Division of Fire Safety, is open to third graders statewide and encourages children to become more aware of how to be safe with and prevent fire and related situations. Forty-seven schools participated this year, with over 900 entries.
There are 26 posters selected overall, and four of the 13 Winners and four of the 13 Honorable Mentions were Bristol Elementary School students.
Congratulations to Jaran Griffin, whose poster will grace the cover of the calendar this year, and to his co-winners Reese Kihm, the month of January, Willa Lathrop, June, and Gemma Lyles, December. Congratulations also to the BES Honorable Mentions: Avery Chase, April, Bella Roell, June, Leah Tierney, July, and Oaklee Mortier-McClung, October.
The Ceremony was also attended by Sparky the Dog, Smokey the Bear, and Governor Phil Scott.
Fire Safety is taught throughout the month of October in all subject areas at Bristol Elementary, including Health and Visual Art. Super-proud art teacher is Deb Mager Rickner.
