Ladies’ Night Out Chorus comes to Middlebury Nov. 14

This Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., the Rutland-based Ladies Night Out Women’s Chorus will present their 8th annual concert in Middlebury at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Church. This year’s concert is titled “Searching for Something Greater,” with special guest Heidi Soons, a harpist with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra.
Over 20 women from the Rutland area and beyond make up this women’s chorus, with Lucy Allen Tenenbaum conducting and rehearsal accompanist Lisa Knickerbocker Sears.
The program will include songs by the Beatles, Cyndi Lauper, Cold Play and contemporary composers Audrey Snyder and Michael Trotta. Trotta’s piece, “Veni Veni Emmanuel” is a 9th century chant, but it is superimposed over a throbbing rhythmic pulse by the singers and percussion that is very contemporary. The text, “Veni Emmanuel” means, “O Come, Emmanuel,” and it is answered by the cleverly researched response from the “O Antiphons” that precede the Christmas Mass, taking the first letter of each word after O and reversing them to find “Eros Cras,” “I am Coming.”
Ladies’ Night Out traditionally performed their fall concert as an Advent Concert, but this year November suited their schedules better. They will continue to offer a concert with holiday spirit and music devoted to our need for the spiritual without regard to specific religious holidays.
Come to hear the ladies this Tuesday evening. A $10 donation is requested at the door, but all are welcome regardless of ability to pay.
