Local auditions for ‘Picasso at the Lapin Agile’ play are Nov. 6, 8

It is 1904, in Paris, France. The Lapin Agile (Nimble Rabbit), quaint watering hole to struggling artists and would-be geniuses, welcomes two soon-to-be legends for one extraordinary night. Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein, whose egos match their intellects, spar with the regulars and each other about art, science, inspiration, love and the promise of the 20th century. Throw in a mysterious visitor who makes the ladies swoon, and you’re in for a well-rounded theater experience.
Equally smart and silly, Picasso at the Lapin Agileasks serious questions about art, science and genius while it cracks goofy jokes about history, romance and how to bake a pie in the shape of the letter e.
Picasso at the Lapin Agilewas playwright Steve Martin’s first full-length play. At its first reading in Martin’s Beverly Hills home, Tom Hanks read the role of Picasso and Chris Sarandon read the role of Einstein. In 1993, the play premiered at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, followed by a successful run in Los Angeles at the Westwood Playhouse (now known as the Geffen Playhouse). The 1995 production in New York City won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Play.
Now the Middlebury Community Players will bring the show to the Town Hall Theater in Middlebury. Auditions will consist of cold readings of brief scenes from the script. There are roles for 11 adult actors, six males and five females. If interested but unable to make audition dates, an alternate date can be arranged. Any questions, contact director Eileen Corcoran at [email protected].
A perusal script is available at the Town Hall Theater Box Office, (802)382-9222. Rehearsals will begin the week of Nov. 12. Performance dates: Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 8-11, 2018, at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury.
