Mount Abe, VUHS girls’ soccer earn wins

ADDISON COUNTY — As the high school girls’ soccer regular season ended last week, Mount Abraham and Vergennes won, but Middlebury came up short.
The Vermont Principals’ Association was set to release playoff pairings on Monday morning. First-round games will be played on Tuesday or Wednesday.
EAGLES
Mount Abe made Casey Ober’s first-half goal stand up to defeat host Rutland, 1-0, on Friday and finish the season with a six-game winning streak and a 10-4 record. Olivia Paine made five saves in the Eagle net, and Raider goalie Elise Magro stopped 11 shots.
Unless Mill River (10-3) lost an unreported game on Saturday, the Eagles appear to be the No. 5 seed in Division II and could host Fair Haven (6-7-1 in the first round.
COMMODORES
The Commodores defeated host Missisquoi on Friday, 2-0. Kaitlyn Brace converted a Morgan Lynk assist in the first minute, and Sydney Weber netted a 30-yard direct kick in the second half. The Commodores did not allow a shot on goal, while MVU keeper Madison Conley posted 12 saves.
The Commodores are playing without all-star center middie Emily Rooney — an injury she suffered earlier this month will keep her out of action for the rest of the academic year, according to VUHS AD Peter Maneen.
The win was the 100th for Commodore Co-Coach Dwight Irish in his 14th season at VUHS.
The 4-10 Commodores look like either the No. 11 or 12 seed in D-III, meaning a game is likely vs. either No. 5 Fairfax (10-3-1) or No. 6 Enosburg (9-5).
TIGERS
On Friday host Milton blanked MUHS, 3-0, as Yellowjacket Samantha Orest notched a hat trick. The Tigers finished the season at 7-7 and look to be the No. 9 seed in Division I and see No. 8 North Country in a first-round game.
