Panther field hockey splits

BRUNSWICK, Maine — The Middlebury College field hockey team split two games vs. ranked teams this past weekend. The Panthers (4-2, 3-1 in NESCAC play) entered the weekend ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division III. They were set to host Skidmore on Wednesday and will host Colby at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
On this past Saturday, Annie Leonard scored 26 seconds into the second overtime to lift the Panthers past No. 10 Bowdoin, 1-0. The Polar Bears dropped to 3-2 overall and in NESCAC play.
The Panthers outshot the Polar Bears, 25-8, and Bowdoin goalie Maddie Ferrucci made 14 saves. Middlebury goalie Abby Furdak earned the shutout with five saves and picked up her first career win.
Both teams had a handful of scoring opportunities deep in the circle, but a strong defensive presence on both ends led to a scoreless first half.
After a scoreless first overtime, the Panthers scored quickly in the second extra session. Erin Nicholas carried the ball across the circle from left to right and finding Leonard on the right side for the game-winner. The goal was the 61st of Leonard’s career, moving her into third place in the program’s career scoring list.
On Sunday No. 2 Babson (9-0) edged the Panthers, 2-1, despite Middlebury’s advantages of 16-11 in shots and 14-6 in penalty corners.
Middlebury scored 3:39 into the game, when Grace Jennings tapped home a feed from Molly Freeman. The Panthers had an opportunity to increase the lead just two minutes later, but Babson goalkeeper Deirdre Barry kicked away Jennings’ breakaway bid. The Beavers tied the game 1-1 at 28:40, when Kate Driscoll redirected a chip-in from Maddy Paro.
The game winner came at 49:10, when Lauren Drakeley took a penalty corner insert from Elise Towers and slid a pass to Ashley Tango, who blasted the ball past Furdak (five saves).
