New Aurora Learning Center offers wide array of after-school activities

MIDDLEBURY — Aurora Learning Center, a community education and recreation center, opened September 18 at 238 Peterson Terrace in Middlebury. Aurora Learning Center (ALC) is now the principal business of The Aurora School, Inc., a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization that operated Aurora School from 1996 to 2017.
During after school hours (3:00 to 5:30), ALC will host recreational activities led by educators or talented community members. ALC will charge a fee for each activity. The fees will be in the range of $15 to $25 per participant for each session.
Beginning September 18, a Classic Games Club is offered Monday to Friday. The games include chess, Monopoly, Scrabble, hearts and gin rummy; one or two other games will be added in October. (Wednesdays will be chess only, at least until mid-October.) This club is led by Parker “Monty” Montgomery, a former chess master who began teaching chess to children in 1990. Enrollment is limited to boys and girls ages 8 to 14.
Beginning September 25, on Mondays only, Girls Circle will be led by Elizabeth “Lizzie” Bogosian, a resident of Burlington. Girls Circle is a nature-based, self-awareness and community-building program for girls ages 11 to 15. Lizzie’s leadership experience includes having directed after-school and camp programs in South Burlington and for Willowell Foundation.
ALC will offer additional after-school activities beginning not later than Tuesday, September 26. The center also plans to host occasional morning, evening and weekend activities. For example, it will host National Chess Day activities on Saturday, October 14.
