I am appalled to learn from Mike Smith’s Community Forum article on September 21 that the Vermont Department of Taxes considers it acceptable to require payments of the Online/Use Tax by a “select few” Vermont residents, the 20,000 or so taxpayers who received threatening letters from the Tax Department a few days ago.  Notwithstanding the possible merits of such a tax, if it is applied at all, payments of such a tax should be required of all Vermonters, not just those who can “afford to pay”.  It is impossible to apply this kind of policy in a fair and impartial manner.
