Vermont State Police Log: Troopers cite drivers for drunken driving

ADDISON COUNTY  — Vermont State Police cited two local drivers with drunk driving in separate recent incidents.
In the first, troopers stopped a vehicle on Main Street Vergennes on Thursday, Sept 7, at five minutes before 6 p.m. The officer screened the driver, identified as 34-year-old Jesse Stearns of Ferrisburgh, for driving under the influence. When Stearns failed the screening, Trooper Flansburg arrested him, took Stearns to the New Haven state police barracks for processing and released him with a citation for driving under the influence, second offense.
The second incident occurred on Sunday, Sept. 10, when at 6:35 p.m. state police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 125 in Ripton. Troopers determined that Claudia J. Riley, 64, of Ripton was driving eastbound on the road when her vehicle traveled off the roadway and collided with a rock causing minor damage to her vehicle. Further investigation showed that Riley was operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, Trooper Szarejko reported. The trooper took Riley into custody, transported her to the barracks, processed her, and released Riley after citing her for DUI.
Both drivers are due to answer their citations in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, on Sept. 25.
State police announced that there will be a sobriety checkpoint(s) conducted in Addison County by area law enforcement agencies within the next three weeks.  This will be done in an effort to monitor the flow of traffic along Vermont’s highways in the interest of detecting and arresting persons under the influence of alcohol or any drug that has impaired their ability to drive.
In other recent activity, Vermont State Police:
•  On Sept. 5 responded to a report of domestic assault at a home in the Upper Plains Road neighborhood of Salisbury. After investigating, police said they determined that Morgan Delorme, 20, of Vergennes had assaulted a family member causing physical injury, and they cited Delorme for aggravated domestic assault.
