Letters to the Editor: Big box stores need not apply

Tractor Supply is not needed.
What is the town of Middlebury thinking? This decision is going to possibly hurt many small, local businesses, namely: Paris Farmers Union, Martin’s Hardware, Aubuchon Hardware, Sears, all of the auto parts stores and Middlebury Agway Farm and Garden. Many of these businesses are locally owned and operated. Middlebury Agway is a family-owned business, has donated heavily within the community and employs many people, young and old. I am a senior and have worked at Agway for more than 10 years, and was also hired as a senior when no one else would even consider me with all my years of experience in retail.
This letter is my own opinion, not that of my employer
Agway is a meeting place for many people young and old, families with young children and pets are welcome. We have had baby goats, guinea pigs and even a pot belly pig who needed a bath in our dog wash. We have a very friendly and knowledgeable staff to assist in any way we can. Will Tractor Supply offer this kind of service? It is a true box store that will employ relatively few people, while potentially harming employment at many other local businesses.
I am very disappointed in the town management that they do not care about the small businesses on the outlying part of the community. If this was a department store wanting to come in, it would be turned down — as has happened in the past for that might hurt downtown businesses. Apparently this is not the case where these other businesses are concerned. If this BOX store is allowed to come what is next? Where does it stop? Is Middlebury now open for box stores? This is a decision that would alter the landscape forever!
Am I the only one to feel this way? Come on, people, speak up and support your local businesses.
