ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police arrested a Middlebury woman last week after, they said, she tried to flush heroin down a toilet and hid cocaine in a flower vase.
On Tuesday, Aug. 29 at around 7 p.m. a state police officer saw some suspicious activity at the Maplefields gas station on North Pleasant Street in Middlebury. As the state police cruiser pulled in to a parking space next to the vehicle with the suspicious activity, Jessie-Mae Decosta spotted the cruiser next to her and she ran inside the Maplefields store.
Police report that Decosta destroyed some heroin by flushing it down a toilet in the women’s bathroom. The trooper started to speak with Decosta regarding her actions, and Middlebury police arrived on the scene and found approximately 2 ounces of powdered cocaine hidden in a flower vase in the women’s room that Decosta had just exited, according to police.
While interviewing Decosta, the trooper saw a bulge in Decosta’s pants and when asked about the bulge, Decosta voluntarily removed approximately 55 bags of heroin from her pants, police report.
State police took Decosta into custody, cited her for possession of heroin and cocaine and released her to answer the charges in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, on Sept. 29.
In other recent activity, troopers:
•  On Aug. 29 at around 1 p.m. stopped a vehicle driven by Corey Yantz, 23, of Lincoln on South Pleasant Street in Middlebury for failure to display a rear registration plate on his newly acquired vehicle. Police said investigation showed that Yantz was under court ordered conditions of release requiring him to follow a 24/7 curfew at his residence in Lincoln. Yantz told the trooper that he was taking a friend to buy earrings at a store in Middlebury and, police said, admitted to the state police officer that this was a deviation from his curfew. Police took Yantz into custody, and he was processed and arraigned in Addison County Superior Court, criminal division, for violation of conditions.
•  On Aug. 30 and 31 conducted saturation patrols on school bus routes in Monkton and Ferrisburgh with a focus on motor vehicle violations around school buses and to promote driver safety and education. As a result of the directed patrols, zero traffic tickets were issued. Police said these patrols will continue throughout Addison County in an effort to improve safety on public roads.
•  On Sept. 1 at a few minutes before 10 p.m. stopped a motor vehicle stop on Route 7 near Lime Kiln Road in New Haven after observing multiple motor vehicle violations. The trooper cited Kayla Weeks, 24, of Rutland for driving under the influence.
•  On Monday, Sept. 4, at around 1:30 p.m. closed Route 22A in both directions near the intersection with East Road in Benson due to a tractor-trailer rollover. Three hours later police announced that the road was open.
•  On Sept. 4 at approximately 7:23 p.m. received a call about a vehicle that had slid off the roadway on Upper Notch Road near the intersection of Notch Road in Bristol. After noting signs of impairment police Jack Austin, 60 of Bristol for driving under the influence.
