Indoor tennis club competes at regionals
ADDISON COUNTY — The Vermont champion women’s tennis team, which plays out of the Middlebury Indoor Tennis club (MIT), competed for the regional title earlier this month.
The “Racquettes,” who play at the NTRP 3.0 (intermediate) level, finished a perfect season with a 6-0 record over The Edge at South Burlington, The Edge at Essex and Topnotch at Stowe. On Aug. 4-6 most of the full team traveled from their home base at MIT to the Portland, N.H., area to compete for the New England Championship for players ages 18 and over.
Members of the team, consisting of athletes ages 28 to 71, are: Barbara Kivlin (Shoreham) and Mary O’Shea (Weybridge), captains; Donna Baldwin (Vergennes), Barbara Beatty (Middlebury), Megan Frankovic (Cornwall), Melissa Lourie and Molly Smith (Weybridge), Emily Lyons (Brandon), Linda Peake (Orwell), Rene Saenger, Karen Shackett and Jill Thomas (Shoreham) and Andrea Torello (Waltham).
Although the team did not reach the semi-finals, they did win three of 15 individual matches, including two of three singles events, and were competitive in many of the doubles events. Observers said the ladies enjoyed the high level of play and the experience of participating at the championship level.
