Solidarity rally to be held tonight at 6:30 p.m. in wake of Charlottesville tragedy
A rally in solidarity with those opposing racist, white nationalists will be held tonight at 6:30 p.m. at College Park in Middlebury (opposite the traffic circle), in response to weekend events in Charlottesville, Va.
On Saturday, one counterprotestor was killed and at least 34 wounded when a man who apparently was a white supremacist at a Unite the Right rally plowed his vehicle into a crowd of counterprotestors. Two Virginia state troopers died later in the day when their helicopter crashed and burst into flames while they were monitoring the demonstration.
The Unite the Right rally brought together hundreds of neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klan members and white nationalists, ostensibly to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue from Emancipation Park in Charlottesville.
Monday evening’s rally in Middlebury is being sponsored by Middlebury’s chapter of Indivisible, a nationwide progressive activist organization. College President Laurie Patton is expected to attend.
