Locals help Babe Ruth team win state title

WINOOSKI — A Babe Ruth all-star team including five Addison County residents earlier this month won the Vermont Under-14 championship and then this past weekend represented the state in the New England regional tournament.
Champlain Valley Babe Ruth League all-stars Barret Barrows, Neil Guy, Carter Monks, Cameron Sprigg and Tucker Stearns played for the Vermont District II Babe Ruth U14 All-Star team that claimed the state title in a double-elimination tournament played in Winooski on July 7, 8, 9 and 15.
Barrows and Stearns are Vergennes all-stars, and Guy, Monks and Sprigg are Mount Abraham all-stars. Their District II teammates came from Colchester, Williston and Shelburne. Rick Stearns of Ferrisburgh and Kevin Knapp coached the team.
District II opened with a 6-4 win over District III on July 7, and then knocked off District I by 6-4 on July 9 to finish on top of the winners’ bracket.
On Saturday, July 15, District II squared off against District IV twice. District IV forced a winner-take-all game by prevailing in the first match-up, 11-7, but District II cruised to the championship in the second meeting, 7-1.
In Pool A regional play, District II dropped games on July 20 to Greater Keene, N.H.; on July 21 to the Maine champion; and on July 22 to the Rhode Island champion. Pool B Champion Trumbull, Conn., ousted District II from the regional tournament on Sunday.
