Bixby to host table read of local man’s play

VERGENNES — On Tuesday, June 27, from 6-8:30 p.m., Zig Zag Lit Mag continues its monthly Table Read Series at Bixby Memorial Library with a reading of work by A. Jay Dubberly of Vergennes.
The format for the table read is simple: the author’s work is read aloud by peers, and then discussed, all while the author remains silent; the author exists like a fly on the wall, observing others interacting with their work.
The Dubberly play that will be read on Tuesday, tentatively called “No Children,” focuses on two 75-year-old ex-hippies living in a camper in central Vermont who are literally haunted by the children they never had. The play is two acts, and the reading will last about 80 minutes with an open-ended discussion to follow.
Muir Haman, the Bixby’s Adult Services Librarian, will act as facilitator for the evening. Readers and writers of all abilities are welcome to attend this event, which gives a unique look at the behind-the-scenes of not only dramatic writing, but of writing in general. The contents of the play may be suitable to those 16 years old and older.
Dubberly is a graduate of Goddard College’s MFA program with a focus on dramatic writing. He is the co-founder of Zig Zag Lit Mag and works as an adjunct professor of Film and English at the Community College of Vermont. His first novella, “Storm & Stella,” is set to hit local bookshelves and Amazon.com this fall.
The Bixby Library is at 258 Main St., Vergennes. The event — to be held in the Bixby’s Half-Round Room — is free. All those who come are welcome (but not required) to participate in both the reading and the ensuing discussion. For more information contact Haman at 877-2211 x208 or [email protected].
