Brandon to celebrate end of ‘big dig’ on May 21

BRANDON — Workers have paved the final portion of Route 7 over the new overflow culvert in the center of downtown Brandon. Now, local residents and business owners are ready to celebrate the end of the six-month long project — and the impending start to the long-awaited upgrade of Route 7 in Brandon.
The Even Better Brandon/Segment 6 project is slated to start in June, and a kick-off party is planned for Sunday, May 21, at the Brandon Town Hall.
The day before, on Saturday, May 20, downtown businesses will be featuring sales to celebrate the taking down of construction fencing and a return to normal traffic flow.
Thirteen businesses will have special one-day offerings, some including discounts of between 10 and 20 percent on selected merchandise.
Then on May 21, engineers and officials from Casella Construction, the Vermont Agency of Transportation, and the town of Brandon will be on hand to explain the different aspects of the Segment 6/Even Better Brandon project. There will be a number of displays showing a pedestrian view of what the project will look like when it’s complete, including drawings and elevations.
There will also be a tree table with information on the plantings slated for the town once the major construction is done.
The informational portion of the party will run from 2-4 p.m. inside the town hall.
Plans have changed slightly for the refreshment portion of the party. Food and a booth operated by Foley Brothers Brewing will be downstairs in the Town Hall. Seminary Street will not be closed for the event.
The culmination of the party will be the world premiere of local historian Kevin Thornton’s finished documentary “Death in the Wilderness — A Love Story” at 7 p.m. upstairs in the Town Hall.
An unfinished version of the film was shown last spring to a full house at the town hall. It’s the story of Brandon Civil War widow Frances “Frankie” Davenport and her quest to retrieve the bodies of her beloved husband and his good friend from a battlefield in Virginia.
The “Even Better Brandon” kick-off party is being sponsored in cooperation with the Brandon Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Brandon Alliance and the town of Brandon.
