ORWELL — Take a guided walk on the wild side to look for and identify birds during the annual Early Bird Nature Walk at Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell on Saturday, May 20. Gather outside the museum at 8 a.m. Your leader will be bird expert Sue Wetmore of Brandon.
Many birds fly through the Lake Champlain corridor as they make their way north with the spring. Wetmore will show you the world of birds, and discuss their habitats and habits. You could see anything from the smallest birds to a majestic bald eagle. Every year the group tries to spot and add a new species to the list of birds seen on Mount Independence.
Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. No pets please.
The fee is $5 for adults and free for children younger than 15. This is a special event before the regular season for the site. The site opens regularly for the season on Saturday, May 27, and will be open daily 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., through Oct. 15.
Mount Independence, a National Historic Landmark, is one of the best-preserved and most significant Revolutionary War archaeological sites in the country.
