Vermont poet to read from her new book May 9 in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Former Middlebury resident Abigail Carroll, Vermont poet, author and wonderer, will present her new book, “A Gathering of Larks,” Tuesday, May 9, at 2 p.m. at the Vermont Book Shop with a booksigning to follow.
“A Gathering of Larks” contains forty personal letters from the author to Saint Francis, revealing him to be a complex man who lived a fascinating life of radical faith. These letters — part devotion, part historical biography, part contemporary engagement, and part inspiration — reveal Carroll’s curiosity and wonder about Francis.
She celebrates his whimsical idealism and impetuousness, explores his spirituality and commitment to poverty, and sometimes even questions him. She also uses Francis as a sounding board for larger questions about the world — and, through her own experience, explores how brokenness makes experiencing redemption possible.
Abigail Carroll is the author of “Three Squares: The Invention of theAmerican Meal,” which was a finalist for the Zocalo Public Square Book Prize. Her work has also appeared in The New York Times, The WallStreet Journal, The Huffington Post, and Sojourners. She makes her home in Vermont, where she serves as pastor of arts and spiritual formation at Church at the Well, and where she enjoys walking in the woods and photographing nature.
