Baseball wrap-up: Eagles get only win for area schools

ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham knocked off Middlebury to highlight local high school baseball action earlier this week. In other games, Otter Valley lost at home, while Vergennes lost on the road, both to Division I opponents.
EAGLES OVER TIGERS
On Tuesday, Eagle starter Adam Whitcomb tossed a complete-game, four-hitter as Mount Abe blanked host MUHS, 5-0. Whitcomb fanned 12 and allowed only two runners to reach base: Nick Kaufmann singled and Patrick Messenger doubled and reached third base in the seventh. “Adam had a great game,” said Eagle Coach Jeff Stetson. Hale Hescock and Simon Fischer both singled.
The Eagles bunched seven singles off Tiger starter Wyatt Cameron to score all five of their runs in the third inning. George Bailey singled twice in the rally and scored; Zach Hines drove in a pair with a hit and scored; Whitcomb, Chris Wood andEli Rickner singled and scored; and Coleman Russell singled.
The Eagles improved to 4-3, and the Tigers fell to 0-7.
OTTERS
On Monday, visiting Mount Anthony used back-to-back-to-back homers and five OV errors in a 10-run fifth inning on the way to a 15-9 victory over the Otters. In all, the 3-2 Patriots drilled five homers in defeating the 4-4 Otters.
The Otters outhit the Patriots, 13-12, and scored runs late but could not make up the power deficit. Reilly Shannon poked three hits and losing pitcher Derek Aines, Colby McKay and Kollin Bissette picked up two apiece. McKay and Bissette drilled RBI doubles, and Dom McCullough added an RBI single. Aines had a one-hit shutout until the fifth, when errors made all the runs unearned.
COMMODORES
On Monday, host South Burlington dealt VUHS a 13-4 setback as Rebel freshman Jack Ambrosino held VUHS to four hits and one earned run in four innings. The 4-3 Rebels broke things open with a six-run second inning as the Commodores dropped to 2-4.
The Commodores’ Tuesday home game vs. Spaulding was postponed until Wednesday. The Commodores visit Mount Abe on Thursday.
