Women’s tennis coasts in opener

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s tennis team opened up its spring season with a 9-0 home NESCAC victory on Saturday over Bates in the Nelson Recreational Center. Middlebury returns to action next Saturday at home against Brandeis at 1:30 p.m. The Panthers opened the season ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III.
Middlebury started things by sweeping doubles play. The No. 3 tandem of Molly Paradies and Heather Boehm posted an 8-1 victory over Lauren Hernandez and Kate Rosenthal. The Panther team of Kaysee Orozco and Catherine Blayze cruised 8-0 at No. 2 against Elizabeth Erbafina and Isabelle Rovinski, while the No. 1 pair of Alexandra Fields and Skylar Schossberger won, 8-5, over Maisie Silverman and Bella Stone.
In singles, the Panthers dropped a combined 12 games during the six matches. Fields breezed by Silverman at No.1 (6-0, 6-1). Orozco kept things rolling at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Rovinski, and Paradies won, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 against Erbafina. Boehm prevailed, 6-1, 6-1, over Stone at No. 3, while Blayze won, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5 against Rosenthal. Schossberger completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph against Olivia Voccola at No. 6.
