Slaters oust Eagles girls’ basketball in D-II quarterfinal

FAIR HAVEN — No. 3 Fair Haven on Friday held on to defeat the No. 6 Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team, 31-28, in a Division II quarterfinal.
The defending champion Slaters improved to 17-5 and will play No. 2 Lyndon (19-3) on Monday at 8:15 p.m. for a berth in Saturday’s final. The Eagles finished at 13-9.
The Eagles trailed throughout but had a chance to tie the game with seconds to go, but Halle Coloutti blocked Emma Carter’s three-point bid.
The Slaters led by 24-19 early in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles twice cut the lead to one point in the period. Back-to-back hoops from Carter and Emma LaRose sliced the lead to 24-23 before an Adriana Dalto hoop for the Slaters set the score at 26-23. After an Eagle free throw, Slater Jessica Brewster sank two free throws to make it 28-24.
In the final minutes a LaRose trey cut the lead to 28-27 before two Coloutti free throws made it 30-27. Carter then hit the first of two free throws, and the Eagles controlled the rebound when she missed the second. But an Eagle shot wouldn’t drop, and Mount Abe had to foul Brewster.
She hit one free throw to make it 31-28, and then when the Eagles went on the attack Coloutti made the game-clinching block.
Carter finished with a game-high 12, and Abby Mansfield scored six for the Eagles.
Coloutti and Brewster scored nine apiece for the Slaters, and Dalto chipped in six points.
