VERGENNES — A recount has been scheduled of the close March 7 vote for mayor in Vergennes, in which former mayor Michael Daniels edged two-term incumbent Bill Benton, 270-265.
The recall will take place at 1 p.m. on Monday at Vergennes City Hall.
City officials said Benton requested the recount on Friday morning. Legally, he had 10 days after the election in which to file such a request.
Daniels previously served as mayor from 2007 until 2013, and before then served two stints on the city council. After stepping down as mayor, he returned to the council in 2014 and served one two-year term before opting again to step aside.
Benton, who like Daniels has an extensive record of volunteerism in Vergennes, served one term on the city council before being elected mayor in 2013.
