Letter to the editor: Benton is effective mayor and deserves re-election
What makes an effective mayor? An effective mayor listens; an effective mayor builds strong relationships with city council members to instigate action; an effective mayor respects and works well with city staff; an effective mayor represents the city professionally outside of the city, building working relationships with neighboring governments.
Mayor Bill Benton is an effective mayor. It has been my pleasure to serve on the Vergennes City Council these past two years with him and be a part of his work to improve our community and maintain its character. His leadership in addressing the issue of truck traffic and pedestrian safety in our city demonstrates his respect for the citizens of Vergennes.
His commitment to the mission of important organizations in our city, such as the Vergennes Partnership, the Vergennes Opera House, Bixby Library and more, is but one example of his understanding of the importance of an economically viable and vibrant downtown Vergennes, and its impact on the greater community.
As an alderman, I can speak directly to his ability to consider all sides of an issue, to maintain a cool head, and to build a strong coalition of people who may not always agree, but work well together, get things accomplished and explore ways to improve life in our city.
Mayor Benton has also represented our city well through his participation in the Vermont Mayor’s Coalition, his participation in the Strong Communities, Better Connections grant program, bringing much-needed attention to the issues facing our city on statewide level.
Please join me March 7 in casting a vote to reelect Mayor Benton to keep us moving forward.
